January 23rd, 2024—The Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports, Dr. Joseph Geng Akech , met with the 13 Sports Federations and National Olympics Committee yesterday at the Ministry Headquarters to discuss the vision and strategy of the Ministry to transform sports in South Sudan. He emphasized the importance of having a legal framework to regulate and promote sports activities in the country. Hon. Minister urged the sports federations to contribute to sports transformation agenda by sharing their views and opinions on sports legislation, governance and financing.
The Hon. Minister expressed his gratitude to all sports federations for their outstanding performance in representing the country in international competitions and assured them of his full support. He also shared President Kiir’s vision of using sports as a tool to foster unity and peace among the young people.
The representatives from the sports federations thanked the Minister and pledged their full cooperation. They also highlighted some of the challenges they face, such as lack of infrastructure, funding and encroachment of sports grounds in Juba. They appealed to the Minister to address these issues and create a conducive environment for sports development in South Sudan.
